Test & Tag Training

Electrical Test & Tag Training - UEERL0003 - Conduct in-service safety testing of electrical cord-connected equipment and cord assemblies

This unit is designed to equip individuals with the comprehensive skills and in-depth knowledge necessary to perform in-service safety testing of electrical cord-connected equipment and cord assemblies. It is aimed at ensuring that all equipment used in various settings complies with safety standards and operates without posing hazards to users or the environment.

The unit covers a wide range of essential competencies, starting with understanding and implementing safe work practices to minimize risks while handling electrical equipment. Participants will become proficient in the correct and effective use of Portable Appliance Testers (PATs), which are specialized tools used to assess the safety and functionality of electrical devices. This includes learning how to configure and operate the tester, interpret results accurately, and determine whether equipment meets the required safety criteria.

A critical part of the training involves the ability to identify common and complex faults in electrical equipment and cord assemblies. This includes visual inspections to spot signs of wear and tear, damage, or defects, as well as conducting advanced diagnostic tests to uncover less apparent issues. Upon identifying faults, participants will be trained on the proper procedures for tagging defective equipment with clear and informative labels, ensuring others are aware of the potential hazards. Furthermore, they will learn how to arrange for the repair or replacement of faulty items to restore them to safe operating conditions.

Another vital aspect of this unit is the documentation process. Learners will gain expertise in maintaining accurate and comprehensive records of all safety tests conducted. This includes completing standardized testing reports, logging results, and ensuring all records are stored in compliance with organizational or regulatory requirements. These records serve as an important reference for tracking equipment maintenance and ensuring accountability. At the time of publication, there are no specific licensing, legislative, or certification requirements attached to this unit. However, the knowledge and practical experience gained through this training are highly valuable for professionals involved in the maintenance and safety assurance of electrical equipment across various industries, such as construction, manufacturing, hospitality, and health care.

By completing this unit, participants will be well-prepared to contribute significantly to workplace safety by ensuring that electrical cord-connected equipment and assemblies operate reliably and securely, minimizing risks and fostering a safer working environment.

The course runs over 1 day of face-to-face training including a practical assessment.

To successfully enrol in this unit, applicants must meet the following prerequisites and conditions:

Prerequisite

  • Completion of UEECD0007: Apply Work Health and Safety Regulations, Codes, and Practices in the Workplace is mandatory.

If you have not yet completed the UEECD0007 unit, you may still be eligible to enrol. In such cases, you can arrange to complete this prerequisite in another group. Please note that an additional fee may apply for enrolling in the UEECD0007 unit.

Range of Conditions

The unit is structured to ensure participants gain practical experience and meet essential operating conditions required for safety testing in various environments.

During the course, in-service safety testing will involve:

  • Testing of at least two different electrical cords.
  • Testing of three different items of cord-connected equipment that exhibit safety faults, specifically including:
    • A device containing an element (e.g., a kettle or toaster).
    • A device containing a motor (e.g., a fan or vacuum cleaner).
    • A device containing metal oxide varistors (MOV) (e.g., surge-protected power boards).

Non-essential conditions or further details related to the course can be found in the UEE Electrotechnology Training Package Companion Volume Implementation Guide.

By ensuring all these conditions are met, participants can maximize their learning experience and be fully equipped to perform in-service safety testing confidently and effectively.

Prerequisite or complete

UEECD0007 Apply work health and safety regulations, codes and practices in the workplace

or

UEENEEE101A - Apply Occupational Health and Safety regulations, codes and practices in the workplace

Upon successful completion of the training and payment of fees, Superior Training Centre (STC) will issue a Statement of Attainment (SOA) for the unit UEERL0003: Conduct In-Service Safety Testing of Electrical Cord Connected Equipment and Cord Assemblies.

This training equips participants with the knowledge and practical skills to ensure the safety and compliance of electrical cord-connected equipment and assemblies. Key learning outcomes include:

  • Applying Appropriate Tagging: Attaching clear and compliant tags to tested equipment to indicate its safety status or identify faults.
  • Work Health and Safety (WHS)/Occupational Health and Safety (OHS): Implementing relevant safety practices, including risk control measures, to ensure a secure testing environment.
  • Connecting Equipment to Testing Devices: Correctly preparing and connecting cords and apparatus to a Portable Appliance Tester (PAT) for accurate assessments.
  • Handling Unplanned Events: Using problem-solving techniques and workplace procedures to address unexpected situations during testing.
  • Documenting Testing Activities: Maintaining detailed records, including entries in the workplace register, to track the outcomes of all tests performed.
  • Identifying Safe and Unsafe Equipment: Distinguishing between safe and defective cords or apparatus based on testing results.
  • Preparation for Testing: Ensuring equipment and the testing environment are properly set up for effective and safe operations.
  • Operating a PAT: Proficiently using a Portable Appliance Tester to conduct safety assessments.
  • Conducting Safety Tests: Executing safety testing procedures on electrical cord-connected equipment and assemblies.
  • Tagging and Documentation: Finalizing tests by tagging the apparatus appropriately and documenting the results for traceability.
  • Interpreting Test Results: Using testing data to determine and verify the safety status of the equipment.

By achieving these outcomes, participants will be prepared to conduct in-service safety testing in accordance with industry standards, promoting safer workplaces and ensuring regulatory compliance.
